For something slightly less imposing, you can go for slim and simple. Canopy hoods are fitted on the underside of a unit with visors attaching to the wall. Used cooker hoods can also be found for kitchen islands too.
Although an obvious consideration of a cooker hood is the look of the product, you also need to consider how it will work and what its performance will be. Cooker hoods are not supposed to be purely cosmetic. Extraction cooker hoods will filter the air and then divert it to the outside. This is the most effective way of clearing steam, smoke and cooking smells from the kitchen. Extraction hoods will need to be mounted to an external wall or in a position where a ventilation hose can be connected.
If an extraction hood isn't practical then another option is to use recirculation. Charcoal filters will remove smells and smoke and then release clean air back into the kitchen. This means that used cooker hoods can be installed anywhere in the kitchen.
With used cooker hoods, you need to consider the extraction rate, because it is the function of a cooker hood to remove smells, smoke and steam. As a rule of thumb, a cooker hood should be capable of changing the air around a kitchen about 12 times per hour. Obviously, the larger the kitchen is the higher the extraction rate needs to be.
All cooker hoods comes with have one or two lights. These help to light cooking surfaces but you need to consider the noise levels. Cooker hoods can be quite noisy and intrusive, so check the level of decibels. Most models will have various settings that can be chosen for different types of cooking.
