Wine coolers are fantastic because they are so low maintenance, but here are a few top tips to get the best out of your wine cooler and the best out of your wine.
Location
Where you decide to place your wine cooler is all-important. If the model you choose has front ventilation then you can put it pretty much anywhere: on its own, under a worktop, built-in and flush to cabinets - your wine cooler can go wherever you like.
However, if your wine cooler does not have front ventilation then it’s important not to position it in a confined space. You must leave between 2 and 4 inches on each side of the cooler to ensure proper ventilation.
Ideally, wine coolers should not be placed in direct sunlight. Similarly, if at all possible avoid positioning a wine cooler close to any appliances that emit heat. For example, laundry appliances, dishwashers or ovens.
Don't overload
Don't overload your wine cooler. It's always best to buy a cooler with a bigger capacity than you actually need. Only at below or at perfect capacity will each bottle be properly cooled. If you exceed the capacity, you run the risk of spoiling wine.
Clean
It's a good idea to clean your wine cooler periodically. Disconnect the power and remove all bottles and shelves. Transfer your wine to a cool, dark place while you clean the unit. Wipe down and reconnect the power. Once it has cooled down you can put the shelves and your wine back in.
Go through this process every six months or so.
Change filters
Most wine coolers feature a carbon filtration system that prevents odours from permeating corks and seeping into wine. Every 3-6 months, these filters should be changed to prevent clogging. If you consider buying a wine cooler with such a system, consider buying some replacement filters too.
A wine cooler is an investment, not just a 'fridge for wine' so, although coolers are not high maintenance at all, it pays to take a bit of care to protect your investment.
